Description
Origin: Probably North Italy, possibly Lombardy

Materials: Walnut and walnut veneer, fruitwood and ebonized inlay, pine and mixed secondary woods, brass and iron hardware, and later paint
Form: Single-door pedestal cabinet or cupboard
Description: A substantial probably North Italian Neoclassical pedestal cabinet constructed in walnut and richly ornamented with contrasting fruitwood marquetry. The rectangular top, door, and side panels are decorated with checker stringing, flower heads, leafy borders, ribbon-tied laurel wreaths, and trailing bows. A molded top and low plinth enclose the deep case, while the single door opens to a later green-painted interior fitted with a shelf. The restrained box form allows the extensive marquetry to remain the principal decorative element.

Condition: Retains an old darkened surface with scratches, abrasions, stains, finish wear, fading, and uneven sheen. Walnut veneers and marquetry exhibit checking, lifting, separation, and small losses. Rear boards or panels have vertical splitting, open losses, fragmentation, and patching. Interior has been repainted green and exhibits scratches, stains, and paint loss.
